Insouciance. Not sure why this word keeps running through my head as I read headlines after headlines of energy shortages on one screen, and climate change protests, COP 26, and environmental shareholder activism on the other. Dual monitors are apparently helpful for holding disparate thoughts. Insouciance though sits in between the two screens since casual indifference accurately describes what climate activists and politicians are doing to our energy slate. Half thought out policies, jingoism, pandering, and scaremongering have created a world in which a realistic and complicated dialogue about energy transition can’t occur. To feign action, we’ve gone ahead and regulated our way to shrinking supplies, neglecting any notion of curbing demand.
